I don’t know about most of the general public but for me I did not know how Fathers Day came about till I chose to open my retail store. This is what I understand- It was the year 1909, while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon a woman, Sonora Dodd, came to the conclusion that we needed to celebrate our fathers as well. She loved her father, William Smart, and appreciated all that he did for her and her 5 other siblings. Her mother died while giving birth to their 6th child. Mr. Smart had to raise his newborn child along with his 5 other children on a rural farm in the eastern area of Washington State. It came a time in Sonora Dodd’s life that she realized the selfishness her father showed raising them as a single parent. She saw in her father that he was the one who made the parental sacrifices and to her he was a courageous and loving man. Mr. Smart was born in the month of June so Sonora thought it was the perfect month to celebrate. So on June 19th, 1910 in Spokane, Washington was the first Fathers Day celebration. It took some time though for it to be celebrated nationally. President Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. But it was not recognized until 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father’s Day. So now we come to that time of year, Fathers Day. Our store has a large variety of everyday items to suit the father, grandfather or husband in your life. If you want to get something more traditional, ie… with the words father or grandfather , we carry picture frames as well as plaques. Our store has a great selection of mahogany airplanes, helicopters, cars and trains as well. Finally, we do carry westerns style items such as picture frames, wall décor, figurines, pictures, coasters and crosses. I just want to remind you all that this is just a small description of the items we keep in stock. So before June 21st hits stop by either of our locations and let one of our employees help you pick out your gift. 3111 Midwestern Parkway - Sikes Senter - 940-691-6317 3005 Grant Street - 940-692-1778 |
